What is toxic positivity? Toxic positivity is false positivity or forced positivity. It is the idea that you should be positive no matter the situation. Can you be too positive? Not so much too positive but positive at the wrong times. Sometimes, when someone is struggling or going through difficult times – to suggest that they need to ‘be positive’ is inappropriate and negates their emotions and feelings. People feel they must fake positivity even when they really feel sad, lonely, angry, frightened or depressed. This is why toxic positivity is dangerous.
